(下文细节根据书籍Hugh M. Cole – The Ardennes: Battle of the Bugle编撰,并不作为史实依据。)

The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Counterattack, was the most important and also German’s final offensive on the Western Front during World War II. The battle took place from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945, in the heavily forested Ardennes region between Belgium and Luxembourg. The Germans sought to prevent the Allies from using the Belgian port of Antwerp so as to split the lines and to surround and destroy four Allied armies. If successful, the Germans would force the Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in favor of the Axis powers without redistributing their resources on the Eastern Front. The Ardennes counterattack was also the battle in which the main defender, the U.S. Army, suffered the highest number of casualties in World War II.

Although the German counterattack caused the Allies to suffer heavy losses, it also severely weakened their own defensive power on the Western Front and their mobile forces on the Eastern side, from then on, they had no reserves to replenish. Four months after the Ardennes counterattack, Nazi Germany was defeated and surrendered.

The most famous historical photo of the Ardennes counterattack was chosen by Facepoolfigure as the figure prototype, which shows an ordinary German soldier, belonging to the reserve of the 1st SS Panzer Division, Kampfgruppe Hansen. The photo was taken at north of the village of Poteau on December 18, 1944, when a group of German soldiers ambushed a convoy of American armored division. After the Americans fled in haste, the German troops took a brief respite. This soldier was wearing an US poncho, combat pants, and showing his sidearm in front of the camera. In the presence of the great unknown, although achieved a temporary victory, the soldier was showing complicated look on his face.

We tried to restore his journey at that time through the form of a personal diary.
(Details below are compiled from book – The Ardennes: Battle of the Bugle by Hugh M. Cole, we do not claim these to be historical facts.)

Today is the second day of the counterattack, the advance of our troops has been slow over the past few days. The roads here are too difficult to navigate and the Yanks have placed a large number of mines around Manderfeld, causing us to be several hours behind schedule.

Last night our troops received orders to block enemy forces on the road to Rechet on the north side of the village of Poteau. We were ambushed in a small wooded area next to a junction where, according to sources, several American armored divisions were scattered in the area pulling back and this junction would have been in their route. We waited for most of the night, and when it was still light, a unit drove over. the Yanks seemed to be completely unaware of our plans, and under the cover of the fog these unlucky guys were caught off guard by our assault gun trucks before they had time to react, and the M5 tanks and M8s in the lead were directly blown to bits by the iron fist. My partner and I had just set up our machine guns and swept a volley when we saw their officer stagger away with two of his men jumping out of the vehicle, which was ridiculous. The rest of the Yanks were even less inclined to fight and abandoned their vehicles to flee.
My buddy and I had been summoned to clean up the battlefield, the Yanks had left a lot of equipment behind, an M3 in front of us had been burned to the ground, they called this car Krautmower, it was really hateful. Since the Normandy landings, the tide of battle has turned against us, because the Americans are building tanks too fast!
Our guys were scrambling for the equipment the Americans had left behind, and I pulled a raincoat and pants out from an armored car and put them on. There was a camera guy next to us taking photos. Dam the propaganda team, what do they know about war? Well, I’ll show him my side arm, this Hi-Power has been with me for a long time, although it is a Yankee design, but in critical times can help a lot, a few years ago in Belgium stranded. I really miss the good old days, which is like now, even the basic supplies can not keep up with, see the winter is coming, but still no distribution of cotton clothes. The Führer said that this counterattack was our last hope for Greater Germany, and that if we succeeded in cutting the Allied lines, we could hope to catch our breath and deal with the Soviet Union again. The idea sounds too crazy, but the Führer’s decision cannot be questioned, right?
